National Interest: Stability in Afghanistan Key to Expanding US Influence in Central Asia

DID Press: US magazine the National Interest says the future of United States’ economic and strategic relations with Central Asian countries depends to a significant extent on Afghanistan’s political and security situation.

In its latest analysis, the magazine warned that Washington’s efforts to expand economic and strategic cooperation with Central Asian countries could face serious obstacles unless Afghanistan’s political and security challenges are addressed.

According to the analysis, Washington is seeking to strengthen cooperation with Central Asian countries in trade, investment, energy, mineral extraction and the development of transit routes. However, security threats, drug trafficking and instability along regional borders could hinder these objectives.

The magazine emphasized that Afghanistan’s geographical position gives it a significant role in connecting Central Asia with South Asia. It said the implementation of major regional projects, including energy transmission and trade corridors, depends on security and stability in Afghanistan.

The analysis also noted that the absence of an inclusive political agreement and restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan could undermine prospects for long-term stability and pose challenges to the expansion of regional cooperation.
