US Plans Deportation of Afghans Held in Immigration Detention, Report Says

DID Press: Some Afghans detained at US immigration facilities, including family members of people who worked with American forces before the fall of Kabul, have been informed that they could be deported to Pakistan or Afghanistan.

According to Bloomberg, the information has been confirmed by a US federal government official familiar with the plan, as well as lawyers and organizations advocating for asylum seekers.

Sources familiar with the matter said the deportation flight has not yet been officially announced, but is expected to take place in the coming weeks. AfghanEvac, an organization that supports Afghans who worked with US forces, said some relatives of those affected had also been notified by immigration officers about the possibility of being transferred on the flight.

Meanwhile, refugee advocacy organizations, including the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) and AfghanEvac, have expressed concerns about the potential security consequences of the move.

According to these organizations, returning vulnerable Afghans and family members of former US military partners to the region could expose them to serious security risks and human rights violations.

US federal officials have not yet released official details about the number of people who may be affected or the exact date of the flight.
