Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Blames Iran Border Closure for Rising LPG Prices

DID Press: Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister has said the closure of the country’s border with Iran is one of the main factors behind the unprecedented rise in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices in Pakistan.

Ali Pervaiz Malik told Pakistan’s National Assembly on Monday that the government is now working to meet the country’s LPG needs through maritime routes.

He made the remarks in response to an urgent notice raised by three members of the National Assembly — Alia Kamran, Shahida Begum and Naeema Kishwer Khan — over the unprecedented increase in LPG prices and growing public concerns.

During the session, Naeema Kishwer Khan asked the government why it had halted cross-border trade with Iran.

LPG is a major fuel source in remote parts of Pakistan that lack access to the piped natural gas network. Demand for the fuel rises during winter, typically pushing prices higher.
