DID Press: A review of US midterm election results dating back to 1946 shows that the party of the sitting president has lost seats in the House of Representatives in 18 of the past 20 midterm elections.

According to the figures, the president’s party managed to buck this trend and retain or increase its House seats in only two midterm elections during that period.
The largest setback for the incumbent party came in 2010, during Barack Obama’s presidency. The figures indicate that US midterm elections have, in most cases, provided an opportunity for voters to weaken the party controlling the White House.
The report suggests that the pattern could be repeated for a 19th time in the current US midterm elections, which are being held today, Tuesday, November 3. It predicts that US President Donald Trump and his Republican Party could face a major electoral setback. The report says this forecast is based on opinion polls conducted in the United States.
