Pakistan Appoints New Consul General in Kandahar

DID Press: Shahbaz Hussain, a senior diplomat at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has officially assumed responsibility as the country’s consul general in Kandahar.

Hussain, who holds the 20th position in Pakistan’s Foreign Service, previously served as director-general for European affairs at the Foreign Ministry. He has also held diplomatic assignments at Pakistan’s missions in Rome and Brussels.

From 2016 to 2019, he served as Pakistan’s deputy ambassador to Kabul and is familiar with Afghanistan-related affairs.

Pakistan’s consulate general in Kandahar had remained without a consul general for several months due to delays in the process of accepting credentials by Kabul.

Kandahar is considered an important centre for Afghanistan-Pakistan bilateral relations because of its political significance and strategic location. Islamabad intends to prioritise expanding trade and economic ties with Afghanistan following the resumption of bilateral trade.
