Two Muslim Candidates Win Seats in US House of Representatives
DID Press: Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian-American Democratic congresswoman, and Adam Hamawy, a Muslim American physician of Egyptian descent, have won their respective races in the US midterm elections and secured seats in the House of Representatives.

According to the Associated Press, Tlaib won re-election in Michigan, retaining her seat in the House. In 2018, she and Ilhan Omar became two of the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress.
Tlaib is a prominent advocate for Palestinian rights and has been among the critics of Israel’s war on Gaza in recent years.
Meanwhile, Hamawy, a Muslim American physician of Egyptian descent, defeated his Republican rival in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District to win a seat in the House.
Before entering politics, Hamawy worked as a physician on humanitarian missions, including treating wounded Palestinians in Gaza.
With his victory, Hamawy becomes the first Muslim elected to represent New Jersey in the US House of Representatives. He will succeed Bonnie Watson Coleman, who did not seek re-election.
