Airlines Resume Limited Afghanistan Airspace Crossings Despite Safety Concerns

DID Press: Several international airlines have resumed limited use of Afghanistan’s airspace in recent months, seeking to reduce flight times and fuel consumption.

Following the widespread suspension of transit flights through Afghan airspace in 2021, some international carriers have gradually begun using the route again.

According to a report by OpsGroup, the absence of active air traffic control services remains one of the major challenges for aircraft crossing Afghanistan.

Under these conditions, pilots must announce their positions by radio and maintain safe separation from other aircraft.

The shorter route and potential fuel savings are among the main reasons behind the gradual return of transit flights through Afghan airspace. However, security concerns and restrictions on emergency landing options remain significant challenges for airlines.
