Germany: Recognizing Taliban Not on Berlin’s Agenda

DIDpress: During his summer press conference in Berlin, Germany’s Chancellor clearly outlined his country’s stance on the Taliban’s caretaker government, saying: “German government has no plans to recognize the Taliban or establish diplomatic relations with this group.”

“Such a thing [recognition of the Taliban] does not exist and cannot exist,” underlined Olaf Scholz, adding this policy will not change.

The remarks come just a day after Germany deported 81 Afghanistan asylum seekers—who, according to German authorities, had committed crimes—back to Afghanistan, following coordination with the Taliban caretaker government and mediation by Qatar.
The move has sparked widespread backlash and concerns over the human rights situation of those deported.

However, German officials have stressed that the deportations were solely due to the individuals’ criminal records and threats to public security, and do not signal any shift in Berlin’s official policy toward the Taliban’s caretaker government.
