Poll: Global intervention urged amid escalating migration crisis in Afghanistan

DID Press: Following the increasing pressure and restrictions on Afghanistani migrants in neighboring countries, DID Press asked its audience what is the best solution to support this vulnerable group in the current situation.

The poll gave participants four options:

  1. Establishing an international mechanism to monitor countries’ treatment of migrants;
  2. Reopening borders and providing asylum in safe countries;
  3. Providing immediate financial and legal assistance by international organizations;
  4. Facilitating voluntary return and livelihood support inside the country.

The poll found that 38 percent of respondents called for an international mechanism to monitor countries’ treatment of migrants.

This option received the most votes and reflects public expectations for serious intervention by international bodies such as the United Nations and UNHCR against discriminatory treatment and mass detention.

In second place was the option “Facilitating voluntary return and supporting livelihoods inside the country” with 37 percent of the vote.  This reflects the desire of a large part of the population to create safe and economic conditions for the return of migrants to the country.

In contrast, “providing immediate financial and legal assistance” received only 25 percent of the vote, and “reopening borders and asylum in safe countries” received no votes.  This demonstrates that people have little hope of changing the policies of immigrant-friendly countries and prefer more practical solutions.

Summary
The results of the poll once again highlight the need to form a collective will at the international level to support Afghanistan refugees. At the same time, attention to the reconstruction of economic and livelihood infrastructure in the country has also been emphasized as a complement to reduce the pressure of migration
