Israel’s Push to Occupy Southern Syria

DID Press: Amid ongoing tensions between Syria and the Israeli regime, Israeli officials warned that any entry of the Syrian army into southern areas of Damascus will be met with a military response from Tel Aviv.

Experts say this move is part of Israel’s broader strategy to weaken and divide Syria.

“Israel is trying to prevent the Syrian army from redeploying in key areas in order to maintain its influence along the borders and keep the Damascus government in a position of weakness,” a regional affairs analyst told Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, some members of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have gone beyond security concerns and are calling for a permanent presence in these areas.

They claim that these lands belong to Israel and should be permanently annexed to its territory.

These statements come amid increased military movements in the border regions, raising the risk of direct military confrontation between Damascus and Tel Aviv more than ever.

So far, the Syrian interim government has not issued an official response to these threats.
