Taliban Tell US Delegation: Grounds for Restoring Ties with US in Place

DID Press: In a continuation of limited contacts between Washington and Kabul, Taliban’s acting foreign minister met with a U.S. delegation led by Adam Boehler, Special Representative of the U.S. President.

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, held talks with the American delegation in Kabul. The group included former U.S. diplomat and ex-special envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad.

The meeting, conducted in a relatively formal setting, covered a range of issues including bilateral relations, status of prisoners in both countries, and potential economic opportunities.

Muttaqi said the changed political and security landscape in Afghanistan has created “conditions for restoring relations with the United States.”

In response, head of the U.S. delegation expressed condolences to the victims of the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan and underscored that Washington “respects the choice of nations” and supports the continuation of bilateral dialogue.
