India Tests Agni Prime Missile, to Hold Biggest Drone Drill

DID Press: India’s armed forces announced plans to hold their largest-ever drone exercise, codenamed Cold Start, in the first week of October to evaluate drone and counter-drone systems. At the same time, India’s Ministry of Defense confirmed successful test launch of its next-generation medium-range ballistic missile, Agni Prime, from a mobile rail-based launcher.

The Cold Start drone drill will bring together senior military officials, defense industry leaders, and researchers, aiming to strengthen India’s air defense network and boost capabilities against emerging aerial threats.

Air Marshal Rakesh Sinha said the exercise will test both drone platforms and counter-drone systems to ensure “full resilience of the air defense network.” Chief of Defense Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dikshit added that drones and counter-drone technologies are “foundational elements of future air defense,” noting the drill will also cover aircraft and systems designed to counter hypersonic weapons.

An Indian official described the exercise as the country’s biggest domestic drill since recent tensions with Pakistan, adding it will simulate drone warfare scenario of last May.

Meanwhile, Defense Ministry confirmed on Thursday (Sept. 25) the successful test of Agni Prime ballistic missile, launched from a mobile rail platform. With a range of around 2,000 kilometers, the missile is capable of precision strikes even under crisis conditions and limited visibility.

Analysts view the simultaneous drill and missile test as part of New Delhi’s broader strategy to enhance deterrence and demonstrate both defensive and offensive capabilities amid regional and extra-regional security challenges.
