DID Press: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that his country will move quickly to reduce its economic dependence on the United States, as retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods take effect.
Carney said four decades of deep economic integration between Canada and the United States had created an excessive dependence on its southern economic partner. He said the Canadian government was therefore seeking to expand trade relations with other markets, including the European Union.
The new Canadian tariffs target a range of U.S. products, including steel, dairy products, cheese, carpets, household appliances and industrial equipment.
Ottawa says the measures were adopted in response to tariffs imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Canada announced the retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, with the measures taking effect on September 8.
