Poll: Major Powers Blamed for UN’s Peace Failures

DID Press: A recent survey conducted by DID Press shows that a majority of respondents believe dominance of major powers over the United Nations structure is the main reason behind the organization’s failure to secure global peace — a finding that has once again revived questions about the UN’s effectiveness.

According to the poll results, 69 percent of participants said that “dominance of major powers over the UN’s structure and decision-making processes” is the primary factor behind the organization’s inability to achieve global peace. This view reflects public concern over the decisive role of countries holding veto power in the Security Council and the political and economic influence of powerful nations within the UN system.

Meanwhile, 18 percent of respondents blamed “corruption and bureaucracy within the UN structure” for the organization’s shortcomings, arguing that such issues have slowed decision-making processes and eroded public trust in the institution.

Another 11 percent attributed the failure to “member states’ mistrust and failure to honor their commitments,” while only 2 percent said that “weak enforcement mechanisms and the lack of practical guarantees for UN resolutions” were the main reasons behind the organization’s ineffectiveness.

The findings indicate that much of public opinion sees the UN’s main problem not as a technical or structural weakness, but rather as the concentration of power and decision-making in the hands of major powers — a longstanding criticism, particularly of the Security Council’s role.
