Taliban Deny Handover of Bagram to US as “Baseless Propaganda by Former Government”

DID Press: In response to claims that Afghanistan’s Bagram Airbase would be handed over to the United States, Taliban government rejected the allegations, calling them “baseless propaganda by failed figures of previous government” and emphasizing the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mohammad Naeem Wardak, Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration at the Taliban Foreign Ministry, said on Saturday, October 4: “Bagram is no longer abandoned. The government that handed the country to foreigners no longer exists. The Islamic Emirate now represents the people and has spent two decades defending its land. Do not worry about the propaganda of failed and psychologically unstable figures of the former Kabul administration.”

These remarks followed a video in which Najib Azad, a former spokesperson of the Afghanistan presidency, claimed that the Taliban had signed an agreement to hand over Bagram to the U.S. He also alleged that U.S. “Task Force 7” special forces were moving from Eigen Airport to Afghanistan, as potential entry into Bagram imminent.

Taliban officials have not confirmed these claims. Earlier, Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting Foreign Minister, said: “Not a single meter of Afghanistan soil will be given to Americans.”

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded Bagram in recent weeks, warning of “bad consequences” if the Taliban do not cooperate, citing the base’s proximity to Chinese nuclear facilities.

Bagram Airbase, located 40 kilometers north of Kabul, played a key role in U.S. and NATO operations over the past two decades. The base came under Taliban control in 2021 after the U.S. withdrawal and recently hosted a military parade marking the group’s anniversary, attended by diplomats from China and Iran.

Some U.S. analysts suggest that reclaiming Bagram would require a costly and large-scale military operation. The Taliban, however, have reiterated their rejection of any negotiations over the base and stressed preservation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
