UNAMA: Taliban’s Justification for Girls’ Education Ban Is Not Convincing

DID Press: Head of UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Georgette Gagnon, has said the Taliban’s justification for continuing to ban girls from education is “neither convincing nor sufficient.”

Gagnon warned that if the restrictions remain in place and no serious efforts are made to lift them, the United Nations will withdraw its support for organizing the next Doha meeting on Afghanistan.

She said the continuation of the ban on girls’ education remains a major obstacle to international engagement with the Taliban and urged the authorities to remove the restrictions.
