Jeffrey Sachs: China being “Punished” for Defying Washington

DID Press: Economist Jeffrey Sachs claimed that China is being targeted by the United States for failing to align its development with Washington’s expectations.

Sachs argued that “China was supposed to develop in a way that was obedient to the United States—but it did not. Now it must be punished.”

According to Sachs, China’s rise challenges the assumption that American-style capitalism is the only viable path for national development. By pursuing an alternative economic model, Beijing has achieved remarkable growth and demonstrated that nations can prosper without replicating a U.S.-dominated system.

Perhaps most importantly, China has refused to bow to Washington’s hegemonic dictates, he added.

The United States, Sachs suggested, would rather confront China than allow it to surpass U.S. economic influence, and any country that resists US directives is treated as an enemy.
