Saudi Arabia Grants $1M to Boost Agriculture, Food Security in Afghanistan

DID Press: International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced that Saudi Arabia has provided $1 million to support agriculture and strengthen food security in Afghanistan. The funding is channeled through the Afghanistan Humanitarian Trust Fund, managed by the Islamic Development Bank.

According to the ICRC, the Saudi grant—delivered via the Saudi Fund for Development—will finance an agricultural and food-security project implemented jointly by the ICRC and the Afghan Red Crescent under Taliban administration.

The program will support 761 farming households and provide specialized agricultural training—including crop management, pest control, and irrigation techniques—to 63 farmers across eastern, northern, and northeastern Afghanistan. In total, the initiative is expected to benefit around 10,000 people directly.

The ICRC highlighted that agriculture remains a critical pillar of Afghanistan’s fragile economy, which continues to face severe economic and security pressures. The assistance, it said, will help stabilize rural livelihoods and improve long-term food security.
