3rd Afghan Evacuee Arrested in US on Terrorism Charges Within Week

DID Press: US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Jan Shah Safi, an Afghan evacuated to the US in 2021, has been arrested in Waynesboro, Virginia, on charges of supporting ISIS-K. This marks the third terrorism-related arrest involving Afghan evacuees in less than a week.

According to DHS, Safi entered the United States in September 2021 as part of the large-scale evacuation that brought tens of thousands of Afghans into the country. His arrest follows two recent cases: Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of killing a National Guard soldier and injuring another near the White House, and Mohammad Dawood Alkozai, who allegedly threatened to carry out a “suicide attack” in Texas.

Kristi Noem, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, criticized the Biden administration, claiming it has created “one of the worst national security crises in U.S. history.”

Investigations into the cases of Safi and the two other suspects are ongoing, and authorities say additional information will be released as the inquiries progress.

Washington has previously arrested several Afghans on various charges.

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban government’s foreign minister, said on Wednesday that the actions of an individual in the U.S. have no connection to the people or government of Afghanistan, adding that the US itself trained and transferred these individuals to its own territory.
