DID Press: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky says Kyiv is prepared to hold national elections, provided that the United States and European allies guarantee security amid ongoing Russian attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv is ready to conduct nationwide elections if Western partners can ensure the safety of voters and the electoral process, rejecting accusations that he is delaying polls to stay in power.
His comments came after former U.S. President Donald Trump alleged that Zelensky was using the war as a pretext to postpone elections. Zelensky’s term formally expired in May 2024, but electoral procedures remain suspended under martial law.
Zelensky stressed that holding elections “is primarily a decision for the Ukrainian people,” adding that without solid security guarantees from the U.S. and Europe, voting is impossible during wartime.
Trump recently questioned the legitimacy of Zelensky’s government and described European nations as “declining,” echoing Russia’s position that Ukraine must hold new elections before any ceasefire.
Zelensky is currently touring European capitals to secure continued NATO and EU support and to prevent what Kyiv calls a “dangerous peace deal” that could leave Ukraine vulnerable. He reiterated that ceding any territory to Russia is “unacceptable.”
