Iraq on Alert after Israel Shares Sensitive Intelligence about Armed Groups

DID Press: Baghdad has entered a heightened state of alert following reports that Israel has transferred highly sensitive intelligence on armed groups in Iraq, raising concerns about the possibility of military action.

According to a report by Asharq Al-Awsat, Iraqi security officials have recently received a highly detailed database originating from Israel that contains extensive information on armed factions, including commanders, military infrastructure, and financial networks linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). The development has fueled growing fears of a potential Israeli strike.

Informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the intelligence was delivered to Baghdad via a Western intelligence agency. Iraqi officials were reportedly surprised by both the scale and precision of the data. The material reportedly includes comprehensive details on group leaders, training camps, missile and drone depots, financial networks, and organizational branches, as well as links to state institutions and influential political figures.

Earlier, an Arab country had warned Iraqi authorities that Israel had received what it described as a “green light” from the United States to act independently inside Iraq, amid Washington’s growing impatience with the continued presence of weapons outside state control. Potential targets of any military action were said to include training camps, weapons stockpiles, and key figures with significant military and financial influence.

In response to the report, Iraq’s National Security Service (Jihaz al-Amn al-Watani al-Iraqi) issued a denial the following day (December 21, 2025), saying that it had not received any threatening messages or imminent warnings. Nevertheless, reports of the intelligence transfer have accelerated internal discussions and consultations aimed at consolidating control of weapons exclusively under state authority.
