Praising Jolani’s Governance in Syria by Turkish FM Sparks Controversy

DID Press: Speaking at a joint press conference with the foreign minister of Syria’s self-declared government, Turkish FM claimed Syria under the management of Mohammad al-Jolani represents an “exemplary model” of governance.

Contrary to the Turkish foreign minister’s remarks, critics argue that describing Jolani’s leadership as “exemplary” does not align with the realities on the ground in Syria. Jolani is widely known for his background linked to extremist groups and continues to face accusations of suppressing dissent, restricting social freedoms, and maintaining a security-dominated system of rule.

From this perspective, praising his performance appears less rooted in transparent standards of governance and institutional reconstruction, and more reflective of politically motivated support that risks normalizing or legitimizing extremist governance practices.
