Zohran Mamdani Sworn in as New York’s 1st Muslim Mayor

DID Press: Zohran Mamdani, a left-leaning populist politician known for his charisma, mastery of social media, and relentless focus on affordable living, was officially sworn in as the mayor of New York City early Thursday morning, just minutes after the New Year’s 2026 eve ball dropped in Times Square.

The ceremony, unusually held in the underground space of an abandoned subway station near City Hall, marked the culmination of Mamdani’s rapid rise over the past year from a little-known state legislator to an internationally recognized figure—a trajectory that has raised hopes among many New Yorkers and Americans nationwide.

At 34 years old, Mamdani became the first Muslim mayor and the first South-Asian American mayor in New York City’s history.

Immediately after the final seconds of 2025, he took the oath of office administered by Letitia James, New York State Attorney General, in the presence of family members, friends, and journalists, officially beginning his tenure.
