Russia Proposes Special Economic Zone at Afghanistan’s Hairatan Port

DID Press: Russia has proposed establishing a special economic zone at Afghanistan’s Hairatan port to support agricultural processing, trade and broader economic activity.

Dmitry Zhirnov raised the proposal during a meeting with the head of the Taliban-run General Directorate of State-Owned Companies, according to the directorate’s spokesperson.The proposed zone would focus on the storage, processing and packaging of agricultural products, while also helping expand commercial activity in the strategically important border port.

The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen economic and trade cooperation between Afghanistan and Russia.

The head of the Taliban-run state-owned companies called for greater Russian cooperation in expanding Afghan exports of fresh and dried fruits, establishing a repair workshop for Kamaz vehicles, and increasing imports of Russian petroleum products.
