Afghans Returning from Iran Economically Better than Those from Pakistan

DID Press: A recent report by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicates that Afghans returning from Iran generally experience better educational, economic, and housing conditions compared to returnees from Pakistan.

The report notes that many returnees from Iran have higher levels of education, more stable access to food, and often reside in inherited or owned homes.

In contrast, Afghan returnees from Pakistan—particularly recent arrivals—face severe economic pressures, rely heavily on daily wage labor, and struggle with substantial debts. A significant portion of this group is forced to rent, frequently encountering difficulties in paying rent.
