UN Chief Urges Respect for Int’l Law amid Escalating Venezuela Crisis

DID Press: UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced deep concern over the rapid escalation of the crisis in Venezuela, following a U.S. military operation and the detention of President Nicolás Maduro, and called for full respect for international law.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Guterres described the latest developments as a “dangerous precedent,” stressing that the rules of international law — including the UN Charter — had not been observed. He added that the Secretary-General is seriously worried that fundamental principles of international law may have been violated.

Guterres also urged all actors in Venezuela to de-escalate tensions and pursue an inclusive dialogue aimed at a political solution, with full respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The remarks come as the unfolding events in Venezuela continue to raise significant regional and international concerns over their legal and security implications.
