CIS Border Commanders Discuss Strengthening Security Along Afghanistan Borders

DID Press: Border commanders from member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have emphasized the need to strengthen border security along Afghanistan’s frontiers and step up efforts to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal migration and organized crime.

At a meeting in Astana, the commanders also discussed operational intelligence sharing, the use of modern technologies and the implementation of joint border operations.

The agreement comes amid growing concerns from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) over security threats along the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border. The organization has also announced plans to provide Tajikistan with military equipment.
