DID Press: Iraq’s main Shiite coalition, holding the parliamentary majority, nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as its candidate, effectively clearing the path for his return to power after more than a decade.

The Coordination Framework—a bloc of Shiite parties—announced that Maliki was chosen as the candidate of the “largest parliamentary bloc” by majority vote, highlighting his extensive political and administrative experience in governing Iraq.
Following the November elections, the coalition secured a parliamentary majority and began intensive negotiations with Sunni and Kurdish parties to fill the prime ministership and other key positions.
Supporters of Maliki argue that his return will strengthen political stability and centralize governance, emphasizing his long-standing experience in handling security and administrative crises. They also note that his extensive domestic and regional networks can help maintain balance and prevent a power vacuum.
Observers suggest that Maliki’s leadership could streamline decision-making and guide Iraq toward a more cohesive executive structure, addressing fragmentation in current governance.
