Afghanistan Embassy in Japan Suspends Operations

DID Press: Afghanistan Embassy in Japan announced the suspension of all activities, including consular services, starting from Sunday.

According to embassy officials, no decision has yet been made regarding the future of this diplomatic mission, and the embassy building in the Minato area of Tokyo will remain closed until further notice.

The embassy had previously been managed by diplomats appointed by the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which fell after the Taliban’s takeover in 2021.

In a statement issued in late December, the embassy mentioned that the decision was made following consultations with the Japanese side, though no specific reasons were provided for the suspension of operations.

In recent years, several Afghan diplomatic missions around the world have been closed due to a lack of financial resources, and in some cases, staff have been replaced by personnel appointed by the Taliban government.

The Afghanistan Embassy in Canberra, Australia, also announced it would close in mid-2026.
