UN Forms 40-Member AI Panel

DID Press: UN announced the formation of a 40-member scientific panel on artificial intelligence. The body’s mandate is to assess the implications of emerging technologies and to propose recommendations on governance and regulatory frameworks for AI.

The United States Mission to the United Nations reacted to the move, saying the UN should keep its focus on core mandates such as international peace and security, human rights, and humanitarian assistance, rather than seeking to regulate or constrain the development of advanced technologies that will shape 21st-century economic and strategic competition.

Supporters of the initiative, however, argue that given the far-reaching impact of artificial intelligence on the economy, security, and social structures, establishing a multilateral global forum for dialogue and coordination is necessary.
