Pakistan Warns Kabul After UNSC Extends Taliban Sanctions Monitoring Mandate

DID Press: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution extending the mandate of the monitoring team under the Taliban sanctions regime sends a clear message to Afghanistan’s de facto authorities that Afghan territory must not be used to threaten or attack any country.

Following the passage of the new resolution extending the mandate of the monitoring team of the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee, Ahmad said the Taliban now face a strategic choice for Afghanistan: “the path of isolation or the path of peace and prosperity.”

He stressed the importance of full implementation of the resolution, saying the extension reflects the Security Council’s determination to continue oversight of the situation in Afghanistan and to ensure Taliban compliance with international obligations.

The Pakistani envoy also expressed hope that the monitoring team, through robust efforts and active reporting, would support the work of the 1988 Sanctions Committee in line with the mandate granted by the Security Council.

The 1988 sanctions regime targets individuals and entities linked to the Taliban and is intended to counter security threats arising from the group’s activities. The extension comes as the international community continues to voice concern over Afghanistan’s security situation and the Taliban authorities’ adherence to international commitments.
