DID Press: Karl Jacobson, former police chief of New Haven, was arrested Friday for allegedly embezzling approximately $85,000 from two city funds. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of financial theft related to misuse of public resources.

Jacobson, who resigned in January, voluntarily appeared under the arrest warrant and was released on a $150,000 bond.
Patrick Griffin, the state’s attorney general, described the embezzlement allegations as “extremely serious,” warning they could undermine public trust in the criminal justice system.
According to reports, New Haven mayor Justin Elicker called the charges “shocking” and noted that Jacobson initially admitted to withdrawing only $10,000 from one account.
Investigations indicate that between January 1, 2024, and January 5, 2026, $81,500 from the New Haven Police Department’s Drug Program Fund went missing or was misused, with bank records allegedly showing checks deposited into Jacobson’s personal account.
The probe into the case is ongoing.
