China Urges US to Scrap Trump-Era Unilateral Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling

DID Press: Beijing on Monday called on US to revoke unilateral tariffs imposed during the presidency of Donald Trump, following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that invalidated key legal grounds used to justify the measures.

On Friday, the Court ruled 6–3 that Trump lacked legal authority to impose sweeping tariffs under the 1977 statute he had invoked—a decision with potential ramifications for global trade.

In response, Trump announced a new 10% global tariff on imports under a different legal basis, then raised the rate to 15% on Saturday. The 15% tariffs are set to take effect on Tuesday for 150 days, with exemptions for certain goods.

China’s Ministry of Commerce said it is conducting a “comprehensive assessment” of the ruling’s impact and urged Washington to roll back all unilateral tariff measures against its trading partners. In a statement, the ministry stressed: “There are no winners in a trade war, and protectionist policies lead nowhere.”

The developments come amid prolonged trade frictions between the world’s two largest economies. The Supreme Court ruling is expected to influence Washington’s trade-policy trajectory and shape responses from international partners, including China.
