Taliban Move Toward Pharmaceutical Self-Sufficiency
DID Press: Following a technical delegation meeting with EU representatives in Kabul, Taliban Ministry of Health prioritized domestic pharmaceutical production and reduced reliance on imports. A €170 million support package was pledged to bolster this initiative.

During the session, the Afghan delegation reviewed challenges facing the national healthcare system, emphasizing self-sufficiency in drug production as a key strategy. Discussions focused on strengthening the health system, combating non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, improving water and sanitation, and addressing cross-border barriers in medical supply chains.
Priority was given to achieving international production standards, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification. The European Union’s pledged support includes $100 million for developmental projects and capacity building in the health system, alongside $60–70 million for immediate and emergency health needs.
The EU also expressed readiness to support specialized training for healthcare personnel, including midwives and physiotherapists, and to create employment opportunities for young professionals.
Both parties agreed to continue coordinated efforts aligned with Afghanistan’s national health strategy to ensure that allocated resources and assistance are utilized effectively and with maximum impact.
