UN Committee Warns Trump’s Rhetoric Fuels Migrant Rights Violations in US
DID Press: United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has warned that racist and inflammatory remarks by Donald Trump and other political figures are contributing to growing violations of the rights of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the United States.

In an urgent report released Wednesday, the committee said the use of “demeaning and dehumanizing language” and harmful stereotypes against migrants and asylum seekers is increasing. According to the panel, some influential politicians — including the U.S. president — have portrayed migrants as “criminals” or a “burden” on society.
The committee warned that such rhetoric risks expanding a climate of intolerance and could lead to racial discrimination and hate crimes.
It also expressed concern about what it described as the “systematic use of racial profiling” by officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other immigration enforcement bodies. The report says individuals of Hispanic/Latino, African, or Asian descent have been disproportionately targeted in identity checks and enforcement operations.
These practices, the committee noted, have in many cases resulted in large-scale detentions of migrants, asylum seekers, and people perceived to be migrants.
According to the report, at least 675,000 people have been deported from the United States since Donald Trump returned to power in January 2025.
The committee consists of 18 independent experts tasked with monitoring implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by member states.
