South Africa Summons US Ambassador Amid Diplomatic Tensions

DID Press: South Africa has summoned US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III over what Pretoria described as “undiplomatic remarks,” marking a notable escalation in tensions between the two nations.

Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola stated on Wednesday that the ambassador was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide explanations regarding his statements. The move comes amid pressure from the Trump administration, which has claimed that Afrikaners and white South Africans face discrimination in the country.

Last year, the U.S. imposed a 30% tariff on imports from South Africa—a measure recently overturned by courts—and granted asylum to white Afrikaners citing “unlawful or unfair discrimination,” while most other refugee applications were halted. Tensions peaked when Trump presented images and videos to President Cyril Ramaphosa in the White House allegedly showing threats against Afrikaners, although later analyses indicated some content originated from other countries.
