Amnesty Warns Short UNAMA Extension Risks Weakening Rights Oversight in Afghanistan

DID Press: Amnesty International has voiced “deep concern” over the three-month extension of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), warning it could undermine human rights monitoring in Afghanistan.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the group said a longer, one-year extension would have provided greater stability and predictability, enabling the mission to focus more effectively on its core responsibilities, particularly human rights monitoring and reporting, as well as work related to women, peace and security.

Amnesty cautioned that short-term renewals risk triggering repeated negotiations over the mandate, diverting attention from implementation and weakening international oversight of the Taliban authorities.

The organization stressed that any review of UNAMA’s mandate should be transparent and involve meaningful consultation with the Afghan population, especially women, civil society groups and minority communities.
