US Withdrawal Shifts Power Dynamics in Iraq Amid Iran Conflict

DID Press: During the ongoing conflict with Iran, NATO allies and the United States requested that Iraqi resistance forces observe a 24-hour ceasefire to allow safe withdrawal from bases under attack.

American forces are currently evacuating Victory Base in Baghdad, which had been repeatedly targeted over three weeks of fighting. Troops are being relocated to U.S. bases in Jordan, effectively ending the U.S. military presence in federal Iraqi territory.

This withdrawal follows a broader U.S. pullout from Syria and the handover of Ayn al-Asad Airbase in January 2026, accelerating the repositioning of American forces in the region.

After the pullout, the only remaining U.S. base in Iraq will be Al-Harir Airbase, which may become a new target for attacks, alongside ongoing daily strikes against Kurdish positions.

The withdrawal from Baghdad is being hailed as a victory for the Iraqi people, who have struggled for two decades to end foreign occupation.
