DID Press: Bloomberg reports that the USS Gerald R. Ford, the newest and most advanced aircraft carrier in the US Navy, is confronting a range of serious operational problems far beyond the recent laundry-room fire.

According to the report, the Pentagon has raised concerns spanning minor issues to fundamental system-wide challenges. One major problem is the lack of sufficient test data to properly evaluate the carrier’s readiness and operational suitability—a gap that persists years into its official service.
Critical systems for launching and recovering fighter aircraft, central to the next-generation carrier design, have been flagged for performance uncertainties and functional deficiencies. Additionally, questions remain about the carrier’s ability to sustain operations under combat conditions, a serious concern for any advanced-class vessel.
Bloomberg notes that these challenges go well beyond the effects of the recent fire and could affect the overall operational efficiency of the USS Gerald R. Ford. The carrier officially entered service in 2017 and is considered the most technologically advanced aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet.
