Top Economist Warns Iran Pressure May Push US Economy Back Decades

DID Press: Simon Johnson has warned that recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz are creating a form of “reverse sanctions” against the United States, putting significant pressure on its economy and citizens.

In his analysis, Johnson stressed that if the U.S. fails to mitigate these pressures, its economy could slide into conditions resembling those of fifty years ago—a period marked by energy shocks, high inflation, and economic instability.

He noted that America’s structural dependence on stable energy flows and maritime trade makes any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz particularly consequential, directly affecting the U.S. economy. The economist emphasized that recent events demonstrate Washington’s increased vulnerability to regional geopolitical changes.

Johnson concluded that if the situation continues, the U.S. could face sharply rising energy, transportation, and supply chain costs, and policymakers must be prepared to manage the economic fallout.
