DID Press: Ali Hashem, a senior correspondent with Al Jazeera Media Network, has expressed surprise at what he described as Iran’s apparent success in repeatedly targeting advanced U.S. and Israeli fighter aircraft, suggesting the possible deployment of a previously undisclosed air defense capability by Iran.

Hashem said recent battlefield developments indicate that Iranian air defense forces may have used a new weapon system during ongoing operations, though the exact nature of the technology remains unclear. He noted that analysts have yet to identify whether the capability involves a new missile platform, radar architecture, electronic warfare system, or integrated defense network.
According to his assessment, aircraft models reportedly affected include the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, and McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle—platforms widely regarded as among the most capable combat aircraft in Western arsenals. He emphasized that confirmation of specific losses and technical details remains limited due to wartime information restrictions and competing claims from involved parties.
Hashem further stated that the developments challenge earlier narratives suggesting that Iranian airspace was fully exposed to hostile operations. Recent performance by Iranian air defense units, he said, indicates the country possesses the capability to engage high-performance aircraft at scale, using a system whose characteristics have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Defense analysts note that if verified, the emergence of an unidentified air defense capability could alter regional airpower calculations and operational planning for both Israel and the United States, particularly regarding risk assessments for manned aircraft operating near contested airspace.
