US Strategic E-3 AWACS Damaged, Raising Concerns Over Airpower Capability

DID Press: News sources report that a strategic Boeing E-3 Sentry operated by the United States Air Force sustained significant damage at the Prince Sultan Air Base. The aircraft was reportedly struck while parked on the ground during a missile attack attributed to Iran.

The E-3 Sentry is considered one of the most critical and scarce strategic assets in the U.S. military inventory, playing a central role in airborne command-and-control operations. The fleet of these aircraft has steadily declined in recent years, with fewer than 20 units currently in service. Replacement programs are not expected to become operational before 2028.

Military analysts view the incident as more significant than a routine strike, noting that damage to even a single aircraft of this type can affect the United States’ ability to coordinate complex air operations in the region.

The E-3 is not merely a surveillance platform; it functions as the command hub of modern air warfare. Equipped with advanced radar systems, it detects threats, directs fighter jets, and synchronizes air missions. As a result, any degradation of this capability could create meaningful disruptions in U.S. operational readiness and regional air command effectiveness.
