Kunar, Nuristan Elders Reach Cross-Border Security Accord with Pakistan

DID Press: Local sources report that after two months of closure, key routes in Nuristan Province have been reopened following an agreement between tribal elders and Pakistani authorities.

According to reports, a delegation of elders from various districts of Kunar Province and Nuristan held talks with officials in Chitral, resulting in a security understanding aimed at easing border tensions and restoring access to blocked routes.

The meeting, conducted in the form of a traditional jirga, focused on reducing hostilities, ensuring border security, and reopening critical transport corridors.

Sources say the route between Barg Matal and Kamdesh, which had been closed for around two months due to insecurity and clashes, has now been reopened following the agreement.

Residents had reported severe disruptions during the closure, particularly in the transport of food supplies and access to basic services.

A copy of the agreement indicates that both sides agreed to maintain a permanent ceasefire across border areas stretching from Nari to Nuristan. It also stipulates that forces in Nari, Kamdesh, Barg Matal, Arnawai, and surrounding areas in Chitral will avoid any military action against each other.

A key clause reportedly requires Pakistani authorities to seek cooperation from local elders to prevent the presence or activity of members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan in these areas.

Elders further stated that communities have been urged to block any attempt by such groups to establish bases or operate within local territory.
