Iran to Launch Construction of Herat–Mazar-e-Sharif Railway Project

DID Press: Iranian officials say work will soon begin on a major infrastructure project in Afghanistan aimed at boosting regional transit and trade connectivity.

Alireza Bikdeli, speaking during a meeting with Iran’s consuls in Herat Province and Balkh Province, said Tehran is prioritizing expanded economic and infrastructure cooperation with Afghanistan.

He added that the Herat–Mazar-e-Sharif railway has been designated Iran’s key development project in Afghanistan for 1405, with preparations underway to begin construction.

Bikdeli stressed that the railway would strengthen bilateral economic ties, increase trade volumes, reduce transportation costs, and improve Afghanistan’s access to regional transit corridors.

According to the Iranian embassy statement, he also noted that more than 100,000 tons of goods have already been transported via rail between Iran and Afghanistan since the beginning of 1405, reflecting growing reliance on rail-based trade routes.

He further said that expanding transit infrastructure—particularly railway networks—remains a strategic priority for Iran in its engagement with Afghanistan, aimed at creating more stable and cost-efficient trade pathways.
