4.2M People in Afghanistan Expected to Need Emergency Shelter in 2026
DID Press: UN human settlements agency UN-Habitat has warned of a deepening housing crisis in Afghanistan, estimating that 4.2 million people will require emergency shelter and non-food assistance in 2026.

In its latest statement, UN-Habitat highlighted that the scale of need underscores an urgent requirement for expanded housing support and humanitarian response across the country.
The agency made the remarks in connection with the 13th World Urban Forum (World Urban Forum 13) held in Baku, noting that while global discussions focus on the future of housing and urban development, for many Afghan families the need for shelter is immediate and critical.
UN-Habitat called for swift international action to ensure adequate and accessible housing for vulnerable populations in Afghanistan.
