EU Alarm: ECB Chief Warns of Possible Food Rationing Amid Global Crisis

DID Press: Christine Lagarde warned that escalating geopolitical tensions could trigger severe disruptions to global food security, including the possibility of food rationing in some regions.

Speaking at a conference of the Association of German Banks, Lagarde highlighted the broader economic impact of military conflicts and supply chain disruptions, noting that around 13% of global oil supply has been affected by recent instability.

She stressed that prolonged uncertainty could deepen the gap between energy supply and demand, driving further price shocks across global markets.

According to Lagarde, rising energy costs represent only part of the challenge. She warned that continued disruptions could also worsen shortages of critical agricultural inputs, particularly chemical fertilizers, potentially reducing food production worldwide.

Economists caution that the heavy dependence of the agricultural sector on energy and global supply chains means that sustained disruptions could directly affect food prices and availability, increasing pressure on vulnerable regions and raising the risk of rationing measures.
