Poll: 89% Say Taliban’s ‘Preachers Law’ Violates Religious Freedom

DID Press: A new poll conducted by DID News Agency shows that an overwhelming majority of respondents view the Taliban’s so-called “Preachers Law” as a violation of religious freedoms in Afghanistan.

According to the survey results, 89% of participants described the law as discriminatory and aimed at excluding non-Hanafi religious interpretations, raising concerns about its impact on religious diversity.

An additional 11% of respondents characterized the measure as a tool for religious control and restriction of societal freedoms. No respondents selected options suggesting strengthened pluralism or improved religious governance.

The distribution of responses reflects widespread concern over the law’s potential effects on religious coexistence and access to diverse religious viewpoints, with critics warning it could further narrow public space for debate on faith-related issues.

The findings come amid ongoing debate over the social and religious implications of the legislation, with civil society voices increasingly cautioning about its impact on fundamental freedoms.
