Norway Urges Taliban to End Discrimination Against Women

DID Press: Norway’s diplomatic mission for Afghanistan has called on the Taliban to end discrimination against women and girls, expressing concern over the group’s recent decree related to child marriage and urging compliance with Afghanistan’s international human rights obligations.

The Norwegian mission said it shares the concerns raised by United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan regarding the Taliban’s latest measures affecting children and women.

In a statement, the mission stressed that protecting children’s rights must remain a priority and that any action leading to violations of fundamental rights should be halted.

The statement further urged the Taliban to respect Afghanistan’s international human rights commitments and reverse policies and restrictions targeting women and girls.

Norway also emphasized the need to guarantee equal rights for all Afghan citizens, particularly women and children.

The remarks come amid continued international concern over the human rights situation in Afghanistan and the extensive restrictions imposed on women and girls since the Taliban’s return to power.
