Reported Sexual Assault Cases in Israeli Army Rise by 40%

DID Press: A new report submitted by the Israeli military to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee indicates a sharp increase in reported sexual assault cases within the armed forces.

According to figures presented in an official session, the Israeli military recorded 2,420 sexual assault complaints in 2025, compared with 1,744 cases in 2022—an increase of roughly 40 percent.

Israeli media outlets, including Haaretz, reported that the 2022 baseline predates the October 7 escalation and the subsequent Gaza war, which has placed significant operational and psychological pressure on the military.

The data show that 82 percent of victims were female and 18 percent were male. Breakdown statistics indicate that 70 percent of cases involved male perpetrators against female victims, 3 percent involved female perpetrators against male victims, and 25 percent occurred between individuals of the same sex.

Military officials have previously stated that training and oversight programs have been implemented to address sexual violence within the ranks. However, critics argue that hierarchical structures, fear of retaliation, and a culture of silence continue to hinder reporting and accountability.

Legal experts and lawmakers have warned that the rising trend could affect internal cohesion and operational effectiveness within the military, with some Knesset members calling for an independent investigation into the issue.

The report has renewed public debate in Israel over sexual violence in the armed forces and increased pressure on military leadership to present a clearer and more effective response strategy.
