Kabul, UN and Qatar Hold Talks on Strengthening Global Engagement

DID Press: Embassy of Qatar in Afghanistan has hosted a meeting between senior officials from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry to discuss Afghanistan’s future relations with the international community.

According to a statement issued by the Qatari Embassy, the meeting brought together Qatar’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Murdif Al-Qashouti, UNAMA Acting Head Georgette Gagnon, UNAMA political affairs chief Scott Smith, Zakir Jalali from the Taliban Foreign Ministry’s Second Political Directorate, and Abdul Hai Qanit, head of the ministry’s Strategic Studies Center.

Participants exchanged views on the future of Afghanistan’s engagement with the international community and explored ways to strengthen diplomatic and practical cooperation.

Zakir Jalali welcomed the initiative, thanking the Qatari Embassy for hosting the discussion and for its continued efforts to facilitate constructive engagement between Afghanistan and international stakeholders.

He emphasized that “realistic and pragmatic engagement” between Afghanistan and the United Nations remains essential for building trust, enhancing mutual understanding, and advancing practical cooperation.

The Qatari Embassy did not provide further details on the outcomes of the meeting. However, the discussions come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts focused on Afghanistan’s relations with international institutions and regional partners.
